Rick Ross
Rick Ross was born William Roberts in 1977 in Carol City, Florida. He
chose his rap name after a 1980s West Coast drug kingpin, Freeway Rick
Ross. One of the larger rappers on the circuit at six-feet and more
than three hundred pounds, the tattooed artist, pulled his first debut
single, "Hustlin," out of the raw Miami streets. Ross was inspired by
Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube, and Trick Daddy, among others, leading to
the creation of his rap group, the Carol City Cartel when he was in his
twenties. Starting out with Suave House Records, he moved on to Miami's
SlipNSlide Records, the same label as Trick Daddy, with whom he toured
during the 2000's.
It wasn't until 2006, that Rick Ross began to release solo efforts. "Hustlin" became a instant hit, inspiring a bidding war for his work. It was Def Jam President and established rapper, JayZ who signed Rick to a multimillion dollar contract. After "Hustlin" went gold in May 2006, it preceded the release of his August 8, 2006 debut album, "Port of Miami," the first project for SlipNSide Records within the Def Jam partnership. "Hustlin'" went on to reach No. 7 on the hip-hop charts and made it to the Billboard Hot 100. Rick Ross aims to strengthen the Miami rap scene, with his "Port of Miami" album achieving No. #1 on the Billboard Top 200 U.S. Sales. The big man has appeared at frequent gigs along with Lil Wayne, Fat Joe, and Pitbull. 15hqqh.
