Notorious B.I.G. was born, Christopher Wallace, on May 21, 1972 in
Brooklyn, New York. B.I.G. stood for "Business Instead of Game. A
popular rap artist of the 1990's, Notorious B.I.G., aka Biggie Smalls
(after a stylish gangster) was murdered by unknown assailants on March
9, 1997.
Wallace was raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn by his preschool
teacher mother, and became an honor-roll student before dropping out for
the more exciting life of small-time drug dealing. Rapping was just a
hobby for the 300 pound, six-foot 3-inch, Christopher, when he was
discovered by a local DJ and encouraged to produce a demo tape. In
1994, Biggie Smalls released his debut album, "Ready to Die," now
considered to be among the all-time hip-hop classics. The classic
single from the album was "Big Poppa." Notorious Big's style was
precise story-telling and witty rhyme. The album has been referred to
as the best of the pioneering hip hop albums. In 1995, assisted by
crewmates Lil' Kim and Lil' Caesar, B.I.G.'s single "One More Chance"
debuted at #5 on the popular charts, one of the highest debuting singles
in music history.
During the mid-1990's, the real-life feud between East Coast and West
Coast scenes was at its height. B.I.G. had collaborated with
Bronx-native Tupac Shakur, but a
falling-out soon occured, culminating in the mysterious shooting murder
of 2Pac. A few years later, Notorious B.I.G. was shot and killed in Los
Angeles where he was attending a Magazine party.
As with his murdered nemesis, 2Pac, Biggie's music became stronger than
ever after his death. His second album, "Life After Death," debuted at
#1 on the charts, having been released barely 2 weeks after his demise.
Generating two hit singles, the album sold ten million copies and as of
2005 was rated the best selling hip-hop album of all time. Other albums
have been released by collaborator Puff Daddy along with R&B group 112.
Biggie's music continues to be released and his poetic verses explored
by the likes of 50 Cent, whose career surged on the strength of Biggie's
influence. As late as 2003, B.I.G. appeared along with 2Pac on music
produced by Eminem. The ultimate tribute to the Notorious B.I.G. took
place at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards in August 2005 at which time it
was announced that further Notorious B.I.G. duets would be released in
late 2005 as "The Final Chapter" album.
B.I.G.s lyrics have been borrowed by modern-day rappers, including Foxy
Brown, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z and 50 Cent, and Biggie continues to be rated
as among the best rappers of all time. The accolades have never let up,
and just a few years ago, he was declared the greatest MC of all time.
