Lovin Me.mid - Nelly
Nelly
Nelly was born Cornell Hayes Jr. in November of 1974. When Nelly was
young, he lived in Spain before moving to St. Louis, Missouri. Dividing
his interests between baseball and music, Nelly left his St. Louis
home and settled in University City where he co-founded a rap group, the
St. Lunatics along with school mates Murphy Lee, Kyjuan Ali, and his
little brother, City Spud. Two years later, in 1995, the group released
a single, "Gimme What Ya Got." It sold more than 10,000 copies.
At the time Nelly's future was still uncertain, as athletically, he had
advanced to the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Association, and for all
intents, he seemed to be on his way to becoming a professional
baseball player.
When the St. Lunatics issued their next song, "Who's The Boss," it
became a local hit, but the group was disappointed as it had failed to
attract the attention of any major record companies. It was now or
never, so the young group made up their minds and headed for Atlanta. It
wasn't long before they realized they had little chance of a future, but
Nelly stuck it out, wanting to try it on his own. He soon caught the
eye of a Universal Records executive in 1999. Within a year, he
released his debut album "Country Grammar" which achieved unexpected
success. The competition was great, but eventually the album rose to
number #1 on the Billboard charts in late summer of 2000. The artist's
next album was "Nellyville" which became a follow-up hit.
