Nas Is Like.mid - Nas
Nas
Nas was born Nasir Jones on September 14, 1973 at Long Island, New York.
Influenced by his jazz artist father, Nas began street rap at age nine,
joining the "Devastatin Seven" in the middle of the 1980s. In 1989,
after meeting up with producer, Large Professor, who helped record his
first demo tape, he joined the chorus on Main Source's 1991 "Breaking
Atoms" collection. Recognized as an up-and-coming star, his arrival was
delayed by personal tragedies until MC Serch invited him to provide a
solo track to Zebrahead. The result was "Halftime" which impressed so
much that it became the lead-off track. This kickstarted a debut album
with assistance from big-name New York producers. Nas was groomed as
Columbia's major rap act for 1994, his lyrics surpassing the
expectations. "Illmatic" was released in April 1994 and exceeded
everyone's expectations, as it continues to be considered one of the
best hip-hop lyrical outputs ever produced. Nas's sophomore collection
debuted at number one on the Billboard album chart for July 1996. This
was followed by collabaration with Foxy Brown, AZ and Nature on the
"Firm," but the effort marked the beginning of a brief period of
decline. "Nasty" Nas became one of the mid-1990's New York rap favorites where he remained for more than ten years. Feuding came and went, most notably with Jay-z throughout the early part of the next decade, but Nas was up to the challenge and adjusted his style, elevating himself from Nasty Nas, the street hustler to gangsta Nas Escobar, ultimately to prophet, Nastradamus. The prophet had read books when he was younger on African culture, western civilization, and scriptures from the Qu'ran and the Bible, all contributing to his extensive base from which arose his cutting edge rhymes. But what originally appeared as fresh and innovative, took on shades of generic commercialization. During 2002, Nas made duets with Jennifer Lopez and Brandy. In December 2001, Nas began his climb back to the top with "Stillmatic" which was received with great acclaim by both fans and critics. Then came the album "God's Son," which equalled the earlier acclaim and spawned hit singles "Made You Look" and "Thugz Mansion." The 2004 double-album "Street's Disciple" was released but by now the force had been lost and he was becoming a target for other rappers, notably 50 cent. Despite, this the voluminous output of poetry and starpower has ensured Nas's inclusion in the list of top rapper's of all-time. 15hqqh. ![]() ![]() ![]()
