Get Ur Freak On.mid - Missy Elliott
Missy Elliott
Missy Elliott was born Melissa Arnette Elliott in Portsmouth, Virginia
on July 1, 1971. Originally, she called herself "Missy Misdemeanor
Elliott", but removed the middle nickname in 2003. Missy Elliott is one
of the few hip hop superstars, who made it to the top through hard work
and talent, rather than attempting to find a shortcut by being
controversial and x-rated. "Missay", as she is known to many of her
fans, started out in an R&B group, "Sista," along with Chonita Coleman,
LaShawn Shellman, and Radiah Scott. As both singer and songwriter,
Missy propelled the group through its demos, causing the act to move to
New York where they were signed by Elektra. Their producer, "DJ Timmy
Tim" Mosley, a neighborhood friend of Missy's joined the group. He was
renamed Timbaland.
It wasn't until 1996 that Missy Elliott became a featured singer on Gina
Thompson's, "The Things You Do," produced by Sean "Puffy" Combs. Soon
after, Missy signed in 1996 with Elektra, creating her own imprint for
which she recorded as a solo performer, once again produced by
Timbaland. In 1997, Missy's solo debut album was released, "Supa Dupa
Fly." It spawned the hits, "Da Rain," and "Beep Me 911." Missy
continued to write, perform along with women artists such as Lil Kim and
Angie Martinez. Her 1999 sophomore album, "Da Real World," generated
hit singles, "All N My Grill" and "Hot Boyz." Her 2001 album, "So
Addictive," held significant hits that included, "One Minute Man," "Get
Ur Freak On," and "4 My People," the latter an International success.
Missy's fourth album appeared in 2002, "Under Construction," generating
her greatest hit ever, "Work It." Missy has appeared with many others,
contributing both as a writer and performer, including Wyclef Jean, and
in a clothing commercial with Madonna, Christina Aguilera, and Britney
Spears.
