Lil Wayne was born on September 27, 1982 as Dwayne Carter, in the city of New Orleans, Louisiana. He was only eleven years old when he was signed to the Cash Money label by executives who were impressed with the youngster. Making a name for himself as a member of the Hot Boys group ("Get It How You Live" in 1997 and "Guerrilla Warfare" in 1999), he released his debut solo album at age 16 "Tha Block is Hot," (1999) and soon was impressing everyone he met with his lyrical skills. This was followed a year later with "Lights Out" (2000) and his third national solo project in 2002, "500 Degreez."

Worried that the youth was being taken advantage of, his mother tried to remove him from Cash Money Records, but he eventually convinced her that his behavior had nothing to do with the label, and he remained with them. Some time later, while he was holding a loaded gun, he shot himself in the chest, almost bleeding to death. Since the unregistered gun belonged to his father, it led to a jail term for his father. After six months, his father was released, then was kidnapped and murdered. Wayne retains a large tattoo on his chest to remember the accidental shooting and another tattoo "In Memory of Rabbit," to honor of his slain father.

In 2004, Lil Wayne's release, "Tha Carter," generated the hit single "Go DJ" and was featured by other artists including Destiny's Child on "Soldier." He is generally acknowledged as being the first person to use the slang terms, "Bling Bling" and "Drop It Like It's Hot." When he was 22, Lil Wayne was named President of Cash Money Records, although not the owner. In 2005, he released his album "Tha Carter, Vol. 2" in late December, while at the same time attending the University of Houston to study Psychology. Lil Wayne is constantly re-inventing himself as he scratches a groove into new territory. He is one true innovative artist who must be watched, for he is not an imitator but an originator who has confidence in his work and ethics.

According to Lil Wayne, music is different from five years ago and you have hip-hop to thank for it. He just sees it getting bigger and better. 15hqqh.
