The Way We Ball - Lil Flip
Lil Flip
Lil Flip, rap specialist, was born in South Houston, Texas as Wesley
Weston. Arriving on stage in the year 1998, he was a product of the
emerging underground rap scene in Houston, Texas. He first appeared
with producer DJ Screw on mix tapes, acquiring his nickname from his
habit of flipping his styles. (It sometimes gets mistyped as "lilfilp".)
The famous producer, DJ Screw, proclaimed his protege the Freestyle King
because of his non-stop impromptu rhyming style. After his successful
introduction, Lil Flip joined a local concert promoter to co-found the
Suckafree Records Label, their first 1998 project featuring A.P. and
Redd, the project called "Hustlaz Stackin Endz."
It wasn't until 1990 that Lil Flip released his independent debut album,
"The Leprechaun." The effort became a local Texas hit because of a hit
single, "I Can Do Dat." An underground following emerged for Lil Flip,
word spread, and there was a bidding war for the services of the Freestyle
King. Columbia Records emerged the victor, signing Lil Flip in 2002,
and the master rapper's reputation spread across the country. His career was
almost cut short when he was nearly killed in a drive-by shooting in
Houston, just before the release of "Undaground Legend." He lived to
see a hit on the Billboard 200 and #5 on the R&B Chart. He was a popular
collaborator for subsequent projects, including David Banner's Mississippi
album. He even made it to the Playstation 2 and continues to generate
original material.
