This is a tribute to the hip hop and rap poetry that has emerged from the subculture of the 1970s. Rap lyrics did not replace disco, jazz, reggae, rock, or the blues, but essentially grew from the earth that was fertilized by the soul music of the twentieth century. It was characterized by new styles, borrowing from earlier forms, not just in music, but also in the look. You could be anything you wanted from traditional to dreadlocks. In order to help follow the roots, this is a sampling of some of the quality efforts of hip hop and rap . Lasting and influential artists are more concerned about "prophets" than "profits," and it shows in the lasting power of their music and rap music videos. It is hoped that the visitor to this site will seek out both the artist and his music, that he might otherwise not have encountered, in order to find the best selections to add to his growing collection of iPod selections.

Among the honored are those versatile artists who not only excelled in the early days of hip-hop and rap, but those who expanded their horizons into production, promotion, and personal achievement, including feature film rolls. Often, the audience at large may be unaware of their skills in the musical and lyrical fields. It is there for them to discover. The ladies of the field are no mere rap honeys who grace the videos as eye candy, but the creators and collaborators of new levels of art and poetry. Inspiration mixes with expiration and life and art become confused. Like the pioneers of aviation, there were old artists and bold artists, but it was said there could be no old bold artists. Tragedy, darkness, and death abounds as one would expect from innovators. The risk is great but the rewards of immortality cannot be ignored.

So much is being produced these days, that mixtures of musical styles have resulted. From the mix, new sounds and styles are emerging. Some go beyond the normal by blending comedy, punk, and hip hop, like the Bloodhound Gang, but we will concentrate on the basics unless a new and significant trend appears.
