Eminem
Eminem was born on October 17, 1973 in Kansas City, Missouri, real name
Marshall Bruce Mathers. When he was young, he lived in numerous States,
until he came to settle in Detroit at age twelve with his mother. He
started rapping when he was in high school, dropping out of school in
the ninth grade. He enjoyed battle rapping, competing with other MCs in
local clubs.) Taking the name "M&M" (later changed to Eminem), he
briefly appeared with a group called "New Jacks," then in 1995 made his
recording debut with "Soul Intent," then helped co-found a new group
called "D12," along with fellow rapper Proof and four other MCs,
Bizarre, Kon Artis, Kuniva, and Swift. He then embarked on a solo career
with two independent releases, "Infinite" (1996) and "The Slim Shady EP"
(1997). The former was heavily criticized as being unoriginal and
imitative, with comparisons of Eminem to Nas and AZ. But the young
artist only grew stronger in the headwinds of the criticisms, soon
winning a Freestyle Performer of the Year Award (The Wake Up Show) and
placing second in the annual LA Rap Olympics. When Eminem's second
independent album came out, it appeared with a furious response to
silence his critics, ultimately generating a few underground hits. This
was followed by guest appearances on singles by MC Shabaam ("Five Star
Generals") and Kid Rock, which led to the young rapper being snagged as
a protege to Dr. Dre who proceeded to co-produce his major label debut,
"The Slim Shady LP" (1999). The album spawned two hit singles, "My Name
Is," and "Guilty Conscience," and was heavily praised and criticized,
despite going triple platinum. He became both newsworthy and
controversial with legal and family issues, and complaints from groups
like Gay Rights. Despite this, he still received many 2001 Grammy
nominations, capturing 3 at the ceremonies, for Best Rap Solo
Performance ("The Real Slim Shady"), Best Rap Performance By a Duo or
Group ("Forgot about Dre"), and Best Rap Album ("The Marshall Mathers
LP"). The previous year he had one a pair of Grammys for Best Rap Solo
Performance ("My Name Is") and Best Rap Album, ("The Slim Shady LP").
Eminem's studio album, "The Eminem Show," was released in 2002 with the hit
single, "Without Me," reaching number 1 in England, while the album hit
number 1 internationally and at home. That year he made his acting debut
in "8 Mile," (a cleaned-up rags-to-riches biography of the rapper). A
single from the soundtrack, "Lose Yourself," became a number 1 single
later that year and the first Oscar to be won by a rapper.
