Dr. Dre was born Andre Young on February 18, 1965. He is best known as a founding father of gangsta rap and of Death Row Records and Aftermath where he was a creative and innovative behind-the-scenes artist. As a rapper performer, he was unimpressive, having a slow delivery with ordinary rhymes, but his calling was in the production field, and he is responsible for introducing the world to numerous big name performers. Dr. Dre entered the world of hip-hop in the early 1980s, as a performer in clubs and house parties around Los Angeles. After hooking up with Ice Cube in 1986, the two wrote for Ruthless Records. Soon after, N.W.A. was formed and their first album came out in 1987 with a hardcore slant that ultimately caused authorities to send them a warning.

Dr Dre helped to initiate the careers of his step-brother, Warren G as well as Snoop Dogg. He later became involved with feature films, creating soundtracks for films such as "Murder Was the Case" in 1994. He appeared in other movies including "Set It Off" in 1996, "Whiteboyz" in 1999, and "Training Day" in 2001, with some work in comedies.

As a musical innovator, Dr. Dre pioneered gangsta rap and G-funk, that relied more on sound than content. Dr. Dre released his first solo single, "Deep Cover" in early 1992, being the beginning of his collaboration with Snoop Dogg and the debut of the G-funk sound. His 1992 debut album, "The Chronicle" had a number of hit singles, including "Nuthin' but a G Thang," the album ultimately becoming multi-platinum, but more importantly changing the direction of hip-hop. Many rap records of the early 1990s began to imitate his sound and his production efforts for both Snoop Dogg ("Doggystyle" in 1993) and Blackstreet ("No Diggity") both of which became major hits as well as key productions in the field. When he sensed that G-funk was winding down, he abandoned it and formed a new company, Aftermath in the summer of 1996, leading to the beginning of a new era for the genre.
