Don Omar was born William Omar Landron in Villa Palmeras, Puerto Rico,
on the 10th of February, 1978. Getting involved in the church at an
early age, the young man evolved into a preacher, which gave rise to his
confidence on stage and his performing abilities. He eventually quit
the church, and soon after was given a chance to be a backup singer by
Hector Delgado Roman (Hector and Tito), appearing in a live concert with
Hector and Tito in 2003, giving rise to hit CD singles, "Baila Morena"
and "Amor de Colegio."
Don rapidly became a popular reggaeton singer and rapper, his star
rising dramatically with his appearances on MTV. His first album, "The
Last Don," received extensive production work by Luny Tunes and
Eliel, and was driven by hit singles "Dile," "Intocable," and "Dale Don
Dale". The debut album sold hundreds of thousands internationally,
including almost half a million in South America alone, winning Latin
Pop Album of the Year and New Artist & Latin Rap/Hip-Hop Album of the
Year, by the Billboard Latin Music Awards for 2003. His album, "The
Last Don: Live" was a nominee for "Urban Music Album" at the 2005 Latin
Grammy Awards.
Omar's biggest hit came on the Chosen Few compilation, with "Reggaeton
Latino," a song that became a 2005 song of pride for Latino's
everywhere. Omar's May 2006 album release was "King of Kings," an album
so successful that it became the highest ranking reggaeton album in the
top 10 U.S. charts, subsequently debuting at Number #1 on the Latin
sales charts, with its primary single, "Angelito."
