  DMXEarl Simmons

DMX was born Earl Simmons in Baltimore, Maryland on December 18, 1970, but moved to Yonkers, NY when he was a child. Starting out as a DJ, he moved on to rapping, making his name on the freestyle scene, receiving a write-up in The Source magazine as early as 1991. His art was a long time in the making with his debut single, "Born Loser" coming out in 1991 (Ruffhouse/Columbia) and "Make a Move" in 1994. Underpromoted and involved in scrapes with the law, DMX acquired a bleak career prospect until 1997 when in solid collaborations and timely guest spots with the likes of LL Cool J he advanced to the right place at the right time. He was a natural to inherit the title as hardcore king on the deaths of Notorious B.I.G. and 2pac. DMX lyrics only partially provided the key.

Known for his rough exterior and intense deliver, DMX struck gold with his 1998 single, "Get At Me Dog" which was a top-40 hit on the charts, and established his trademark obsession for dogs in lyrics. DMX acquired his name from the DMX digital sound machine, though he is sometimes referred to as "Dark Man X." His debut album, "It's Dark and Hell is Hot" was released in 1998 and quickly shot to #1 on the Billboard charts, an event that was to repeat with his first four albums. The next year, he released his sophomore album, "Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood" with its controversial photo of DMX covered in blood, an album that was destined to hit triple platinum. The next year he went on tour with Jay-Z and the Method Man team. Toward the end of 1999, he came out with "And Then There Was X" which spawned the hit single, "Party Up." The album sold more than 5 million copies.

It wasn't long before DMX graduated to movies which included "Romeo Must Die" along with Jet Li (2000) and "Exit Wounds" with Steven Seagal in 2001, to which he contributed a hit single, "No Sunshine," to the sound track. In late 2002, the artist published his memoirs "E.A.R.L. The Autobiography of DMX." Spring of 2003 saw the release of a second film with Jet Li, entitled "Cradle 2 the Grave," the film achieving strong opening crowds, assisted by its DMX-weighted soundtrack that debuted in the top ten. Throughout the successes, DMX continued to struggle on the wrong side of the law, his life and music and acting careers bound up in one gigantic unpredictable serial.

Other popular artist singles include: DMX "Here We Go Again", DMX "Get It On the Floor," and DMX "Gonna Give It To You."
