Daddy Yankee
Daddy Yankee, born Raymond Ayala on February 3, 1977 in Rio Piedras,
Puerto Rico, (homeland of actress-singer,
Roselyn Sanchez), is also known as El Cangi. Although he started singing
professionally in his teens, about social issues, the young man was
destined to become a professional baseball player, a career target that
was abandoned after being shot in the leg while he was leaving a
recording studio. Instead, accompanied by the well-known Playero DJ, a
pioneer of reggaeton, he became popular in his native Puerto
Rico, recording songs with Alberto Style in 1998. One song made it to
the soundtrack of the movie "One Tough Cop" while another appeared on
the Piece Maker album, produced in 2000 by Tony Touch.
With five platinum albums in the vault and his own record label, named
after his first success, Ayala has recorded in both Spanish and English,
and has collaborated with Nas, DJ Eric, Luny Tunes, Nicky Jam and most
recently with Snoop Dog on a video derived from "Barrio Fino." Ayala
is set to appear in the 2006 Paramount film, "Talento de Barrio," as
well as promoting his own Daddy Yankee clothing line, known simply as
"DY". Although he has predominantly performed reggaeton, he has
also recorded salsa, and he remains one of the best known
superstars to emerge from Puerto Rico onto the International stage.
