D4l (or Down For Life) is an Atlanta based rap group that formed in 2003
and consists of Fa-Bo, Mook-B, Stoney and Shawty Lo. In late 2005, they
released their novelty hit single "Laffy Taffy" which hit Number #1 on
the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 by January of 2006. Their raps are simple
and melodic with the usual romantic euphemisms. Their debut album "Down
4 Life" was released in November 2005.
The group has virtually sprung from the depths of Atlanta, casting aside
their street life hustles, for a more meaningful artistic bent. Not
some manufactured candy-coated group, this is the real thing from the
depths of Down, but with their overnight success, it seems likely
they may have to change their name to something that involves success.
Their first sound was the catchy "Betcha Can't Do It Like Me" that
became an underground hit and introduced their style and originality to
commercial producers. Next up was their Laffy Taffy hit that radio
couldn't get enough of and has brought them national attention. The four
young men from separate worlds have formed together into a single
entity: lyrical, synchronized, and rhythmically unified.
Their debut CD, "D4L: Down For Life" from Dee Money and Asylum Records
is a reflection of the west side of Atlanta with a unique flavor that
has already been influencing other groups. The four young men have
relied, not on gimmicks, but on originality. They are the originators
and the self-motivators, and did not require a promoter to get them
started. They got it going all by themselves through determination,
effort, and a belief that they could do it better than anyone. These
are natural talents who will be going a long way to achieving success
and influence in the industry. But D4L is still very new and fresh, and
the future has yet to be written.
