Beyonce
Beyonce Giselle Knowles was born on September 4, 1981 in Houston,
Texas. She was a founding member of girl's group Destiny's
Child. She co-wrote and co-produced most of the group's hit
songs, which generated sales of greater than 34 million records
internationally. Beyonce was the second woman ever to win the ASCAP Pop
Songwriter of the Year Award. Beyonce Knowles started her career at the
age of seven. After meeting LaTavia Roberson, she was joined by her
cousin, Kelly Rowland, (born Kelendria Rowland, on February 11 1981, in
Atlanta, Georgia. They were then joined by LeToya Luckett (born March
11, 1981 in Houston, Texas). The four talented girls founded Destiny's
Child. Unlike other groups that were artificially created and produced,
Destiny's Child was a quartet of natural artists. They had been
influenced by Diana Ross and the Supremes and the showmanship and impact
of the Jackson Five. They first entered the entertainment scene on
television, debuting on Star Search.
Their first self-titled album, which included the hit single, "No, no,
no" was released in 1998. A year later, their next equally successful
album was released, "The Writing's On the Wall." The album reached the
top ten and quickly became triple platinum in sales, leading to a pair
of Grammy nominations, in the grand style of the famous Afro-Puerto
Rican pop artist, Irene
Cara. The group went through changes with Luckett and
Roberson being replaced by Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin, but
she left a few months later. The group's third album, "Survivor" was
another hit effort. In 2001, Beyonce began her acting career, most
notably in the Mike Myers comedy hit, "Austin Powers: Goldmember" as the
sexy spoof of spy films, Foxy Cleopatra. The group eventually trimmed
to three, with Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams rounding
out the trio.
