  Curtis Jackson50 Cent the rapper

50 Cent, his name coming from a local Brooklyn Robber, was born Curtis Jackson on July 6, 1976 in Queens, New York. Never knowing who his father was, Curtis was raised by his grandparents after his mother's murder. Early on, he became involved in the street life which meant primarily the drug trade. It wasn't until his son was born that he began to target a straighter path for himself, and in the late 1990s, he began to pursue rap seriously. He soon encountered Jam Master Jay from Run-DMC, who signed Curtis to his label, JMJ. Jam Master gave him basic training, but 50 Cent left the label in search of stardom. He was found and discovered by Track Masters who recognized his innate lyrical potential and by 1999, he had signed with Columbia Records. The result was his breakthrough album, "Power of the Dollar," but bad luck struck. When 50 Cent was shot 9 times but survived in year 2000, Columbia Records execs were afraid of the negative publicity, so they decided to let him go. In spite of not getting commercial radio airplay, "Power of a Dollar" became an underground hit along with his earlier single, "Thug Love." In fact, it was his underground fan base that was largely responsible for his ultimate success.

It was Eminem and Shady Records that gave him his next break, the established rapper bringing him to the attention of Dr. Dre. 50 Cent signed with Dr. Dre's Aftermath label, along with Shady, Eminem's label, (being the first to sign with Shady Records.) But before starting production, 50 Cent released a bootleg album of his raps, "No Mercy, No Fear." The cut "Wanksta", aimed at rapper Ja Rule became the most requested song on New York radio, and it moved quickly, being added to Eminem's movie soundtrack "8 Mile" and had its own video release, and was picked up by MuchMusic, MTV, BET and most radio stations around the nation.

It was 50 Cent's first official album in 2003, "Get Rich or Die Tryin" that became a top seller in its own right, with hit song "In Da Club," and promotional support from Dr. Dre and Eminem. The album sold 870,000 units in its first week and was platinum by the second week, breaking the record for the first week sales of any major label debut. Within a year it had become platinum seven times. His second album, "The Massacre" (2005) competed with the public feud 50 Cent was having with a fellow rapper. Two hit singles came out of the album, "Candy Shop," and "Just A Lil' Bit." That same year, he published his autobiography, "From Pieces to Weight." He has also encouraged promotions for his group, G-Unit, including a deal with Reebok for his G-Unit sneakers. He made it to the animated home screen with a guest starring spot on The Simpsons in February of 2005, and there is even a video game starring 50 Cent, called "Bulletproof," to be released in the fall of 2005.

After the success of 50 Cent's Get Rich Or Die Tryin', Interscope granted 50 Cent his own label, like his mentor Eminem. In 2003, G-Unit Records officially became a record label. 50 Cent appointed his manager Sha Money XL as the president. 50 Cent is the first signed artist to G-Unit Records besides the original Shady and Aftermath Records. In 2003, the label signed Lloyd Banks (Christopher Lloyd), Tony Yayo (Marvin Bernard) and Young Buck (David Danell Brown) as the established members of G-Unit. In 2004, 50 Cent alongside Dr. Dre signed The Game (Jayceon Taylor). As of 2005, R & B singer Olivia (Olivia Longe), DJ Whoo Kid, and west coast rapper Spider Loc joined G-Unit Records. 50 Cent has since scouted for a new hardcore rap group, and has signed the Brooklyn veteran-duo M.O.P.
